What is Celiac Disease
Celiac disease is sometimes also referred to as coeliac disease or celiac sprue and is a digestive autoimmune disorder (not an allergy) that damages the villi in the small intestine and interferes with the absorption of nutrients from food. This means that your body does not get the necessary fuel to function properly, and this can ultimately lead to malnutrition. Celiac disease is a chronic, inherited disease, which means that (1) you must have the gene for celiac disease and (2) the gene must be triggered to become a celiac. Typical triggers are environmental, emotional or physical events such as stress, pregnancy, surgery, or a viral infection. If you suffer from celiac disease you cannot tolerate gluten, a protein found in all foods that contain wheat, rye, or barley. Gluten can also be found in many medicines, vitamins, cleaning supplies, and lip balms. Damage to the small intestine occurs every time gluten is consumed even if none of the over 300 symptoms show. Celiac disease cannot be cured, and the only effective treatment is a life-long adherence to an entirely gluten-free diet.

My Take on Custom Choice Cereal
I recently reviewed a box of gluten-free cereal from Custom Choice Cereal, which I was able to customize myself and add my own ingredients. I was able to choose up to 11 different ingredients, including dried fruit, nuts and seeds, as well as other extras. I started with the organic corn flakes and added organic bananas, apple, pineapple, natural Goji berries, and organic chocolate chips. As I added ingredients, the price on the right side of the screen reflected the new additions and the nutrition facts panel on the right side of the screen did as well adn each updated automatically with each new ingredient added so I knew exactly how much my cereal would cost and how many calories were in my cereal, as well as how many grams of fiber, carbs, sugar, etc. I love this feature as it lets me know exactly what I'm getting, as if I was standing in the grocery store aisle holding the cereal box in my hand.

The 12 oz. of cereal came in a resealable bag with the nutrition facts label on the back and the name of the cereal on the front, which I got to name myself before checking out at the site. The taste of the cereal was actually very good. Not being real familiar with gluten-free foods, I was expecting something that tasted horrible actually. Each of the dried fruits complemented the other and went very well together and the organic chocolate chips gave the cereal an added sweetness. My boyfriend did not like the apple at all but I thought all the ingredients were very good, especially the sweet Goji berries which I had never had before.

As for the price of the cereal, it is pretty expensive in my opinion, costing $4.69 just for plain cereal without any ingredients. I try to be as frugal as possible when I shop for my family of four so I don't even pay this much for cereal at the grocery store. Each additional ingredient costs anywhere from $0.39 to $1.69. I referred a few people to the site to check out this cereal and they all thought the same thing that the price was very expensive. I believe if this cereal was priced right, more people would have the opportunity to try it out and continue to buy it because it actually was a great tasting cereal and it's great to add only the ingredients you love.
