Pic Pocket Books Review and Giveaway

Lynnette at Pic Pocket Books was kind enough to allow me to review 4 great children's book for my iPod from her site, as well as 3 fun math apps from her partner site.

I was given codes to download Best Friends Sleep Over by Jacqueline Rogers, Oh, Crumps! by Lee Bock, ¡Ay, Caramba! (which is Oh, Crumps! in Spanish), and The Crystal Mountain by Ruth Sanderson.

I was also given from her partner site, NSC Partners LLC, three fun math apps to review in 2nd, 3rd and 4th grade levels.

About Pic Pocket Books and NSC Partners LLC
Books at Pic Pocket Books range in price from $0.99 – $8.99 and books are currently available for purchase at the Apple App Store. Once you download a book, it is yours to play as long as you want. Every book comes with the following options: audio narration, automatic page turning, touch-screen interaction and “learn-to-read” functionality in which words are highlighted as they are read aloud and/or can be touched to be heard. Apps are being updated to also include personal recordings and greater interactivity with the text for early readers. If your child cannot read yet, they can just listen to the audio narration. In consumer tests, it has been found that children who can’t read nonetheless follow the words along, which may help them with early reading skills later. If your child is not old enough to "turn the page," pages will turn automatically at the designated places within the narration. The Apple iPhone and iPod touch are currently supported and they are currently working on offering our titles on other smartphones as well. They are constantly adding new titles to their lineup so check back often! If you'd like to see your favorite book on the list, you can nominate titles for publication as they appreciate any and all suggestions, just email your favorite titles to our publisher. Unfortunately, apps cannot be played on the computer at this time and work only on iPhones and iPod touch devices for now.

NSC Partners LLC is a Hawaii based company that develops iPhone operating system (OS) device (i.e., iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad) and web-based applications for the education, healthcare, medical, and sports markets. The company, founded in 2008, strives to have a positive influence on its customers and serve a noble purpose globally. Forty-three apps focused on kids math in English, French, Spanish, Filipino, Korean, and Portuguese are currently available in the iTunes App Store. New medical and sports apps are in development and test. NCS Partners LLC developed fun applications that stimulate and inspire children to learn and practice math both at home and at school. The applications encourage children from Kindergarten to 4th grade to practice addition, subtraction, multiplication, fractions, time, etc. Children can gain confidence by doing practice problems with unlimited time, or they can build proficiency by selecting "Minute Math" to see how many problems they can answer with a time limit. Teachers are using the Kids Math Fun applications in their classrooms. There is an added “Double Dare” feature so children can expand their math skills by mastering the inverse relationship between addition and subtraction. A “Try Again” feature allows children to develop mastery by attempting a problem again if they get it wrong. A “Show Scores” button allows children and parents to see the high scores for all regular and “Minute Math” activities. A score board in the right hand corner shows how many problems have been completed along with the totals for correct and wrong answers. Graphics include: Smiling kids, kids playing outdoors, healthy fruit and vegetable snacks, boats, and buildings. Total Practice Problems can be set between 5 and 100 problems, the Minute Math Timer can be set between 1/2 minute and 10 minutes, and High Scores can be cleared.

My Review
My son is 10 years old and is a fairly advanced reader but he loves being on my iPod no matter what, be it playing games, looking up information, whatever, so this automatically made him want to check these apps out.

After reading the books, he felt they were more for "little" kids but he did read them and thought they were "pretty good." His favorite were The Crystal Mountain and Oh, Crumps! I read the books also and I agree that they were more for younger kids, probably 8 and younger in my opinion. I really like The Best Friends Sleep Over myself, which was a very cute story about four little animal boys having a sleep over and having a fun time when one gets scared. In the end the other friends come to his rescue and they end up having a great night. The other stories include animals which I think really makes the stories more fun for the kids and keep their attention. The narrators of the stories were very easy to understand and the highlighter followed along word for word, which I think is a great feature.

Next, my son played around with the fun math apps and he really liked them all. He liked that it was like a game and he scored points and could challenge himself. He mostly played the 4th grade math app as he just finished the 4th grade. He worked on addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division in single, double, and triple numbers, as well as decimals.

I watched as he explored the math apps and thought that the problems were quite challenging for grade level and took a lot of brain power, which I loved seeing him use, especially during the summer months. I think playing these math apps over and over will be sure to keep him sharp during the summer, as well as during the school year. At the end when a high school is beaten he has the choice to put in his name so I think this would be great for siblings to use and they could challenge themselves to beat the others score.
